Tabasco pepper


  • Tabasco pepper is a variety of the chili pepper species (scientific name: Capsicum frutescens)
  • The peppers are named after the Mexican state of Tabasco
  • Tabasco peppers start out green and ripen to orange and then red
  • It is best known through its use in tabasco sauce

Tomato

  • Tomato is the edible and (typically) red fruit of the tomato plant (scientific name: Solanum lycopersicum)
  • The Nahuatl word 'tomatl' (used by the Aztecs) gave rise to the Spanish 'tomate', from which the English 'tomato' is derived
  • The domestication and use of the tomato plant as cultivated food may have originated with the indigenous people of Mexico
  • Tomatoes are a significant source of umami flavour
