- It is also known as bulrush (in British English), cattail (in American English), cumbungi (in Australia), and raupo (in New Zealand)
- It is found in a variety of wetland habitats and its rhizomes are edible
- Evidence suggests that its rhizomes were eaten in Europe 30,000 years ago
